The End Client, a Pan-European telecom operator, ran a Video On Demand service that used Silverlight 2 on the front end. It was nice looking, but slow for the viewers in terms of performance and load times. Also the VOD service had a very basic mobile interface in XHTML and therefore undermined the client’s standing with the mobile audience.
The End Client approached its provider of end-to-end IP video technology and asked about enhancing and refreshing its system. The provider accepted the project and tasked Oxagile with all activities associated with front end development, while his in-house team worked on the back-end.
A classic waterfall approach was followed by Oxagile for this project, involving a 3-month-long elaboration phase done by three full-time business development and technology specialists from Oxagile. All-in-all a dozen of different specialists were involved in this project from Oxagile side on various stages.
A new front-end rendering solution was created on the Zend framework. Silverlight 4 was used throughout the system and the video player, including new Smooth Streaming and PlayReady DRM technologies. The new platform included extended functionality for content and media management, a custom advertising module, a video recommendation feature, advanced search, variable skinning, social features (ratings, comments, social networks integration), tag cloud navigation and much more.
Once the new system was released to the public it was widely acclaimed and contributed to a rapid increase in the market share for the End Client.
